October is the season of scary movies, haunted houses, and things that go bump in the night. But sometimes, the scariest thing isn’t a ghost lurking around the corner. It’s walking into a room full of strangers, signing up for a class you’ve never taken before, or putting yourself out there without knowing exactly what will happen.
As adults, we get pretty good at sticking to what we know. We find our routines, settle into our comfort zones, and put off trying that fun new thing for next week, next month, or even next year. But what if the thing you’ve been putting off turns out to be the most fun you’ve had in ages?
The Fear of Being a Beginner
There’s something uniquely intimidating about being a beginner as an adult. We spend so much of our lives trying to be competent, prepared, and in control that voluntarily doing something we’re not good at can feel pretty freaky.
Maybe you’ve thought about taking an improv class, but the idea of performing in front of strangers makes your stomach turn. What if you can’t think of anything funny? What if you say something ridiculous? What if everyone else knows what they’re doing and you look like a big dummy?
Here’s the good news… You don’t have to be funny to take an improv class! You don’t need acting experience, a quick wit, or a secret talent for comedy. You just need to show up and be willing to try.
In fact, one of the best things about improv is that making mistakes isn’t just accepted. It’s part of the fun! When everyone in the room is encouraged to take risks, embrace the unexpected, and laugh at themselves, being a beginner starts to feel a lot less intimidating.
The Other Side of Scary
Think about the last time you did something that made you nervous. Maybe you went to a party where you didn’t know anyone, tried a new hobby, or struck up a conversation with a stranger. Chances are, the anticipation was worse than the experience itself.
Trying something new gives us an opportunity to surprise ourselves. You might discover a talent you didn’t know you had, find a new favorite hobby, or meet new people who become genuine friends.
That’s part of what makes improv so special. Rather than worrying about getting everything right, you’re encouraged to be present, listen to others, and see where the moment takes you. Nobody knows what’s going to happen next, and that’s exactly the point.
Make This Season a Little Less Frightening
If you’re looking for fun things to do in St. Augustine, a unique date night idea, or adult classes that offer something different from your usual routine, Third Space Improv might be just the place to start.
Our improv classes offer a welcoming environment to meet new people, build confidence, and have a good laugh without the pressure of being perfect. And if jumping into a class still feels like too much, come enjoy a live comedy show and see what improv is all about!
This Halloween season, we challenge you to do something a little scary. Sign up for that class, invite someone new out, or say yes to an experience you might normally avoid.
You might just find that the scariest part was deciding to try.
Now go ahead and check out the beginner improv and stand up classes we have coming up in November!
