Learn the art of cooperative play!

Improv Classes in St. Augustine

Whether you’re new to town and want to meet like-minded people or are going through a life-changing event, comedy and improvisation classes can help you get connected and centered through cooperative play. Guided by an experienced instructor, you’ll learn to improvise through interactive exercises. Third Space Improv offers classes from beginners to experienced (Levels 1-5). Individuals need to be registered before a class starts—registration closes the day before the first class.

Take your improv to the next level.

Level 1

(No experience needed.)

Throughout this intro to improv, students explore the basic concepts of improvisation in a warm, safe, and supportive environment. These classes are designed to help you step out of your comfort zone, build self-confidence, and explore creativity using the fundamentals of improv training. Designed for both the professional actor and non-actors seeking personal and professional development, this intro will expose students to:

  • Being and responding in the moment.
  • Accepting and building.
  • Embracing – and using — failure.
  • Co-creating with others.
  • Communicating effectively.
  • Thriving in an unscripted environment.

Students leaving this class will have a working understanding of the basic fundamentals of improvisational theatre. You’ll learn to think on your feet and build essential improv skills through hands-on games and exercises. As a result, you will gain an increased appreciation, sharper communication skills, and comfort with spontaneity as a performer on stage (and in life) without a script.

Level 2

(Prerequisite: Level 1)

As the next step in our class series, Level 2 expands on the fundamentals from your previous level in the same warm, safe, and supportive environment. Continue building self-confidence and exploring your comedic creativity while engaging in a higher level of saying “yes” to your scene partner. You will play short-form group games to loosen up, while also learning the foundations for solid scene structure. These in-person improv classes are designed to highlight responding in the moment, giving and taking focus, active listening, and failing with grace in an unscripted environment—on stage and off.

The class culminates in a student showcase.

Level 3

(Prerequisite: Levels 1 & 2)

Level 3 Improv takes the “yes, and…” concept and directs it to building strong characters, connecting through authentic relationships and developing emotions that heighten scenes. You will play short form improv games, continue developing scene work and begin sticking your toes into long form improv waters.

Class culminates in a student showcase.

Level 4

(Prerequisite: Levels 1, 2 & 3)

After learning the improv language, how to create characters, and, how to build relationships with that language and those characters, what will you do next? Create great scenes of course! You’ll lay a solid foundation for scenework by learning to initiate scenes with purpose, recognize games and patterns, and heighten the action.

Class culminates in a student showcase.

Level 5

(Prerequisite: Levels 1, 2, 3 & 4)

Now that you know how to create solid scenes, it’s time to put those scenes together. You’ll learn how to keep the momentum of solid scenework alive by practicing strong initiations, walk ons/offs, edits, callbacks and other tools to keep scenes and characters moving forward – based on only one suggestion.

Class culminates in a graduation show.

Level 6

(Prerequisite: Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5)

After graduation, you can stay together in a Level 6 class. This is a Design-Your-Own-Class (DYOC), meaning YOU let Third Space know how you’d like to further your studies and the improv journey continues based on that request.

(Usually students opt for an in depth long form improv class.)

Class culminates in a student show.

Workshops

Or as we like to say, Playshops. Throw work out, put play in!

Including the signature Yes Mingler – part digital detox, part intentional networking, and part community party – Third Space Improv hosts and facilitates activities for people to connect while leaving cell phones at the door. The Improv Jam is another signature playshop where you play improv games even if you’ve never ever done so – a not-as-scary-as-it-sounds adventure because Third Space is a safe, supportive place for everyone to play. These playshops are what some have dubbed, “recess for grown-ups!” So, be a kid again and join the playtime!
