Why Your First Improv Class Shouldn’t Be Scary

Improv Class at Third Space Improv

Entering the hallowed halls of comedy school and registering for your first level 1 improv comedy class can feel a lot like standing on the high dive as a kid. You imagine everyone watching you, waiting for you to mess up, and secretly hoping you’ll do something amazing. Maybe you’re not sure how it even works. Is it like sketch comedy? (It’s not).

That mental picture is exactly what makes people nervous.

But a real level one class on improv is nothing like that. And at Third Space Improv in St. Augustine, we work hard to make sure your first class is welcoming, supportive, and — most importantly — fun.

Here’s why your first class shouldn’t be scary at all.

Improv Classes Are Designed for New Improvisers

A big misconception is that an improv elective like this is only for “naturally funny” or outgoing people. The truth is, introduction classes for new improvisers exist specifically for people with no experience.

You won’t be surrounded by seasoned performers. As an absolute beginner you’ll be with other first-timers who are feeling the exact same mix of excitement and nerves.

We structure classes so you can ease in gradually, learning simple exercises before moving into games and scenes.

No one expects you to arrive confident. Confidence is what you build along the way.

You’re Never Alone

One of the greatest fears adults have is being put on the spot:
“What if I freeze and don’t know what to say?”

In improv, you always have teammates.

Every activity is group-based. Scenes are done together. Your instructor is right there guiding you. If you get stuck, the room supports you instead of judging you.

That safety net is built into the art form.

Freezing isn’t failure — it’s just part of learning something new.

Mistakes Are Welcome

In most areas of adult life, mistakes feel risky. At work, you want the right answer. In social situations, you want to say the perfect thing, and in public speaking situations you want someone to pull the fire alarm.

Improv flips that script.

In class:

  • There are no wrong choices. (Even in level 2 and level 3!)

  • It’s not stand-up comedy. Laughs often come from “oops” moments

  • Perfection is not the goal

  • Trying is more important than succeeding

When you realize the room celebrates the imperfections, the fear melts away.

Improv Is About Skills, Not Being Comedic

Your first class focuses on improv skills anyone can learn:

  • Listening

  • Being present

  • Saying “yes, and…”

  • Supporting others

  • Making simple, honest choices

None of these require you to be funny or theatrical. They just require you to show up willing to play. This is true even for advanced improv.

Once people understand that, improv becomes far less intimidating.

It’s More Like Recess Than a Performance

Improvisation should feel playful. Think of it as a place where adults get permission to laugh, be silly, and get out of their routines.

No microphones. No scripts. No pressure.

Just a room full of people remembering how fun it is to be human together.

Most new students leave their first class saying some version of:
“That was way less scary than I thought.”

A Friendly Culture Makes All the Difference

At Third Space Improv, we pride ourselves on creating a warm environment for improv comedy — especially for locals trying improv in St. Augustine for the first time.

Whether you’re shy, outgoing, or somewhere in between, our classes are built to help you feel comfortable from day one. The core improv philosophy is to support.
